Wellness & Prevention
Our mission is to provide women of all ages with the gynecological care they need to have a lifetime of good health. Wellness and prevention are the keys to long-lasting women’s health, and we seek to provide you with the tools you need to stay as healthy as possible.
There are several tests and tools we use to ensure your continued wellness and to prevent common conditions from occurring.
Bone Density Testing
Bone density testing uses X-rays to measure the density of minerals like calcium present in your bones. With this information, your doctor can estimate the strength of your bones and if you are at risk of osteoporosis. In general, the thicker your bone density, the longer it takes for osteoporosis to develop.
If your bone density is lower than what is considered normal, there are simple measures you can take to increase their thickness and strength. These include exercising and lifting weights, as well as making sure you get enough vitamin D and calcium.
Sometimes an ultrasound is used to get an early indication of bone density, with an X-Ray follow-up if the ultrasound indicates need.
Diagnostic Pelvic Ultrasound
An ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to create an illustration of your internal organs. A pelvic ultrasound is used to see if there are any potential problems in your pelvic region that can’t be examined directly. Most often these are issues related to the health of your urinary or reproductive system.
Female reproductive disorders that can be discovered using a transvaginal ultrasound include:
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- Uterine fibroids
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Ovarian cysts
- Endometriosis
- Abnormal bleeding
While ultrasounds may be uncomfortable depending on the type of test you’re having, they’ll never be painful.
Immunizations (Including Gardasil)
As part of your annual and routine exams, your doctor will recommend the appropriate immunizations you should have to stay healthy. One of the options that should be considered for our younger patients is Gardasil.
Gardasil is a vaccination that protects you from Human Papillomavirus (HPV). It is particularly effective in children and teens younger than age 18. HPV is known to lead to cervical cancer and genital warts, so prevention is considered critical to your long-term health.
