What is NovaSure Endometrial Ablation and is it right for me?

The procedure is a one-time five-minute procedure that gently removes the part of the lining of the uterus that is responsible for the bleeding. In many instances, the procedure can greatly reduce or even stop the bleeding altogether. It is a far less invasive alternative to having a hysterectomy, and generally avoids the side effects of hormones.

It is a good option for women with long-lasting or heavy periods who are not looking to become pregnant in the future. Once your doctor rules out more serious issues that could be causing the heavy bleeding, you may be a good candidate for the procedure.

For women with heavy periods due to bleeding due to benign causes who are finished childbearing, it’s important to talk to your doctor about whether the procedure is a good choice. We’ll share important safety information and answer any questions you may have about NovaSure.

What can I expect following the procedure?

You can expect general anesthesia during the procedure. Your doctor will slightly dilate your cervix. Then, a thin probe will be inserted into your uterus with netting that will expand to fit the shape and size of your uterus.

A radiofrequency is used to deliver energy to the netting for about 90 seconds, and the netting and uterine lining are removed. You may experience temporary side effects including cramping, nausea, vomiting, discharge, and spotting.

The side effects should only last a brief period, and most women can resume normal activities within a day or so.

While every woman is different, you can expect to see results fairly quickly. Plan on giving your body up to three months to heal fully and to get on its normal cycle. Then you and your doctor will be able to understand what your periods will be like.

If you have any questions about whether or not NovaSure is a good choice for you, give us a call to schedule an appointment. We’ll go over the procedure and discuss the benefits and risks. If you are a good candidate, we’ll get you scheduled so you can get back to normal life as quickly as possible!
