What Is GeneSight?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test. This test examines your genetics and potential medications that you might take. The goal is to look at your genes to figure out how they might affect how you respond to certain medications.
Using GeneSight, we can learn more about specific variations in your DNA when compared to other people. Then, using those results, we can figure out how you might respond to medications that might be prescribed to treat a wide variety of issues.
The results of the tests do not necessarily indicate that something is wrong with your DNA. There are plenty of natural variations that take place throughout the human race. Still, these variations could play a role in why some people respond better to certain medications than others.
Our only goal is to provide you with the best medical care possible. By figuring out whether you may respond better to some medications than others, we can provide you with the best care possible.
What Are the Steps in the GeneSight Test?
There are several steps that we will follow to carry out this test. First, a member of our team will order the test for you. Then, we will use a cheek swab to analyze the results. Other steps include:
- Collect the Swab: First, we will collect a swab from the inside of your cheek. This process is painless. We need to collect a few cells so that we have some DNA to analyze.
- Send Off the Sample: We will send the sample to a local lab. The lab will test the sample and provide us with the results.
- Wait for the Results: Generally, it takes two days for the results to come back. We will give you a call and let you know when the results are ready for review.
- Review the Results With You: Once we have the results, we will go over them with you. We might be able to wait until your next visit. Or, we can call you back to your office if you would like to know the results of the test sooner.
The test is very straightforward, and we can use the information to make decisions about your care.
Why Should I Take the GeneSight Test?
The biggest reason to consider taking the GeneSight test is that we can use the results to make better decisions regarding your care. Sometimes, there are multiple medications that we can use to address a specific problem. We need to figure out what medication is best for your situation, meaning that we need to address the problem and limit possible complications and side effects. The results of this test can help us figure out which medication is best for your needs.
